To the Young Lady who called my son a “loser…”

To the Young Lady who called my son a “loser,”

I don’t think that you intended for your words to have an impact, and you were probably joking. But I want you to know how your words changed something… just not in the way you might imagine.

You see, everyday I tell my son that he’s a winner and I think it worked, because he barely noticed you when you hollered out to the both of us walking into school, “Hey Loser!

I don’t think your words made one bit of difference to him.

And I stopped worrying about what people think about me quite some time ago.

Even so, I want to help you understand the problem in calling somebody a loser.

Everybody remembers their first. Their first day of school, their first kiss, their first love. And the first time they’re called, “loser.” I’ve never been called a loser in my entire life; not once, not by anybody.

Unfortunately I have to relate that word with you now. Every time I read, hear, or have to spell that word…. your face will come up.

I don’t like equating your face with that word. You seem like a nice person who meant it to be funny. I just don’t think you realized that your one word would become a part of who you are to somebody else.

Everyday I drill into my son the power of his words. If he started calling everybody winners, if he started to treat everybody like winners, people will start to equate that word with him.

It’s kind of like Grandma’s house. Grandma’s house always smells like gingerbread cookies. No matter where you go in life, no matter what you’re doing, whenever you smell gingerbread cookies, you think of Grandma.

Let the words that you say always be positive so that when people think of you, it will always be positive thoughts and words that come to mind ABOUT you.

I can see that you have so much to offer the world. Start by being the voice that tells people they’re “winners,” so that when they think of you, they will think of YOU as a winner. Because you, my Dear, ARE one. Show the world who you really are. Be the winner you were meant to be.

YOU ARE A WINNER!

Signed,

~Not your mom, but I’m here if you need one
